we finally had nice weather and I got to spend all day working on the car too. Pulled the strut housings off the e30. As soon at the baby goes to sleep i'm going to take the springs off and swap the struts, then put them back on tomorrow (along with all new everything for the suspension)

Be careful with the springs.

I love working on cars for fun. I hate working on cars because I have to. I wear gloves now which has saved me several times from far worse injuries. Just cheap ones with rubber padding on the back. Better to have a slight bruise instead of a gashed hand.

That's why I do it for a living. I always wear nitrile gloves, though. Much faster and easier cleanup, not to mention prolonged exposure to all the chemicals isn't good for you. Dirty, scraped up hands are definitely a badge of honor though.

Ya I put on nitrile gloves half way through. Wish I thought of it beforehand. I got coolant all over me including in my hair and a small drop on my lips. Didn't taste good. I ended up showering in dish soap afterwards

Lol I hate getting coolant on myself more than anything else, brake fluid being a close second.

Yeah unless you feel like showering in brake cleaner, which, no thanks, much pain.

The dish soap was a good idea though

As much as it sucked, this made me feel that way. Trying to learn enough to pass on some decent knowledge to my kids - ha!

Gear oil is the worst. That stuff stinks forever. If you get a tiny drop of it on your clothes, just throw them away. No amount of washing will ever get that vile stench out.
Side note: I changed the oil, transmission fluid and diff fluid in the ranger today. The tranny fluid was nasty. The diff fluid looked OK, so I think it's safe to say the truck's never spent any time under water. Ready for the next road trip!

Something my brother taught me: Before you work on your car, clip your fingernails. That way you don't get grime underneath them.

Worked on my Ranger too today. Yanking the Trans to replace it. Got the driveshafts pulled, and yanked the transfer case. Decided that was a good stopping point, especially since I had plans with the girl and I fought the transfer case for quite a while. Tomorrow, it's yanking the tranny and starting work on the new one. Will probably have to get a couple seals and gaskets, and I'm kicking around the idea of doing all the U-joints while the shafts are out. Factory joints and they're all still good though.

Nice, its a pain to take that dirt off, when i worked for summer on a shop they had this orange scent soap with sand in it and it was the best thing to degrease your hands.

like this right?
I have that same set (the compressors, not the zip ties) but I really hate them, if you don't put them on just right they don't compress it enough to get the strut mount back on. One of these days I am going to invest in a set of the jaws-style ones.

I can't tell if that's better or worse than just using the compressors. I'm gonna go with worse since the compressors are at one end.
I used compressors like that in high school while helping friends with their cars. I was rather calm about them. Then I learned what can happen when they go wrong. Now I'm terrified and surprised I didn't die.
One time I accidentally dropped a spring while those had it compressed. Nothing happened but my friend was mad.

What's wrong with those style of compressors? I've never heard anything bad as long as you use them properly...

There was one that used to be called agent orange (up until 2005 or so I think,) that worked wonders. They ended up changing the name finally, not sure what the hell its called now.

They have the potential to slip off or even break when compared to other types. And if they get bent like one pair a friend rented their more dangerous because it's easier for them to slip.
They're just a slight hook to go over the spring. If they aren't set right or if they get jostled they can slip off.
More complex/expensive models have more of a hook to them and they usually have a pin that goes through the hook under the spring so the spring is enclosed which makes slippage less likely.

Oh yeah, mine have the pin on them, didn't realize that pic above did not
